The most common opening line on the phone here is some version of the same confusion, and it arrives as questions about choosing between two trips that sound interchangeable from a distance and stop sounding that way as soon as somebody lays the facts side by side. That is what this office does. It takes booking requests, arranges the reservation with the company that operates the week, and takes its commission from that company once you are home. It takes no money from you, holds no card number, and there is no checkout anywhere on this site.
What it costs you and who pays us
Do I pay you a fee for arranging this?
No. The operating company pays a commission after your travel is finished. Nothing is added to your price for using this office.
What do the figures on the trip pages mean?
A per person figure in double occupancy, covering what the trip page lists under inclusions and nothing outside that list. Air fare is separate unless a page says otherwise.
Are those figures final?
They are the figures the operating company published for the season. The written figure you get back confirms dates, party size and room type, and that is the number that binds.
Why do the two halves of a pair sometimes cost different amounts?
Different companies, different seasons, different lengths of stay. The gap is a fact about the two products and carries no meaning beyond that.
Will you tell me the cheaper of the two deserves your booking?
No. We will not say that, and we will not imply it. Price is one line in the comparison and you weigh it against the others yourself.
When is money actually due?
To the operating company, on its own schedule, after you accept a written figure. We never take a deposit, a card number or a bank detail.
Can you hold a place while I decide?
We can ask the operating company whether it holds inventory, and we tell you exactly what it answers. Some do for a few days, some do not at all.
Do prices on this site move?
Yes, when the operating company changes them. The trip pages are updated when we learn of a change, and a written figure supersedes anything printed here.
Why the desk sets two side by side and stops there
Why is everything in pairs?
Because most callers arrive naming one place while describing the other. Sixteen trips, eight pairs, each pair holding two places that get confused with one another.
Which one should I take?
That is yours. We lay out drive times, elevation, walking distances, what the days look like and what each price covers, and we hand the decision back.
What if I push and ask you to just pick?
You will get the same answer in more detail. Stating a preference would make us a party to a choice we do not have to live with.
Can I book both halves of a pair?
Yes. Several people have taken one in spring and the other two seasons later. They are separate reservations with separate companies.
Do you sell the pairs as a package together?
No. A pair is a way of arranging information, not a product. You book one trip at a time.
Is one half of a pair harder than the other?
We will describe daily distance, surface and elevation change in plain numbers. What those numbers mean for you is something only you can judge.
Are there sixteen trips and no more?
Sixteen. When one is added it will arrive with its counterpart, because a place without its confusable twin does not belong on this site.
Does the order of the pairs mean anything?
No. There is no ladder here, no house favorite, no ranking of any kind, and nothing on this site is arranged from better to worse.
Work this office turns down
Is this a publication that rates trips?
It is not. Nobody here writes about places for a living, and not one honest review exists on this site because the office does not produce that kind of work at all.
Do you handle travel insurance?
No, in any form. Not sold here, not arranged here, not advised on here.
Do you handle entry paperwork?
Also no. Entry paperwork is between you and the relevant authority, and we do not read documents or advise on them.
Do you operate any of these trips?
No. Every trip is run by an independent company. We are the office that arranges the reservation and nothing more.
Will you tell me whether somewhere is safe?
No. We will not make that call for you, and we do not publish assessments of that kind.
Can you say whether a trip is within my reach?
No. We publish the distances and the terrain and leave that judgment with you and whoever advises you.
Do you book flights?
No, and the lookup on the front page does not change that answer. Every figure quoted here covers ground arrangements and nothing in the air. That box passes your dates to a booking company that is not this desk: it quotes, it holds the seat and it takes the payment on its own pages. We never see the fare and never hold the ticket.
Do you arrange group departures or corporate travel?
No. Every request here is handled one party at a time.
Getting a written figure back
How do I start?
Send the request form on any trip page or on how a request is handled. The form takes requests 24/7 and every one lands in the same queue.
How fast will somebody answer?
A message that arrives during the working day is opened before that day ends. A written figure takes two to four working days.
Why does a figure take days?
Because we ask the operating company for your dates and your party, and we wait for its answer rather than repeating what is printed on a page.
What does a written figure contain?
Dates, party size, room type, the per person figure, what it covers, what it does not, and the operating company's cancellation terms in full.
Can I ask for figures on both halves of a pair?
Yes, and many people do. Say so in the request and both go out the same day.
Am I committed once I ask?
Not at all. A request is a question. Nothing is reserved and no money moves until you say yes to a specific written figure.
Can I call instead of writing?
You can call a travel agent in Charlotte at (704) 362-5187 and talk it through. The figure itself still comes to you in writing.
What if something on this site is wrong?
Write to pierhead@thebriarreview.com with the page address and what you read. Corrections go up as soon as they are confirmed, and the cancellation terms at the cancellation terms are checked against the operating companies on the same schedule.
Reserve a place, or ask before you do
A request costs nothing and commits nothing. Name one place or name a pair, and both halves come back priced against your dates.
